Live-Blogging the Debate

Let's give a shot.

T-minus one minute. Where's my drink?

Oh, right, water. Woo! Friday night.

Beigie?

I'm here, though we've already paused the DVR because my wife has to run and pass off the on-call pager to a colleague.

I'm watching on MSNBC. Has anyone been watching Chris Matthews lately? He usually licks McCain's ass all the time, but he has been absolutely brutal towards him the last few days.

---Deni

-----

I'm watching on PBS.

Is it just me, or is Lehrer trying to start a catfight?

"Say it to him! Say it directly to him!"

He's a little hands-on early.

-JJ

-----

9:18
Yea, that was weird.

So far Obama sounds strong and direct. McCain seems to be rambling.

--Deni

-----

6:24

Very talking-point, sound-bite directed. Starts at one talking point, gets lost, finds another. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Agree Obama sounds good, getting to the specifics, and avoiding the quibbling Lehrer so seems to want.

Ooh, BO, nice move with the health care credit story. Walkin' the wha? McCain already getting folksy about his bad old days in Congress, bringing out the war stories.

-JJ

----

9:28

Yes! He pointed out McCain's tax on health care.

--Deni

-----

9:33

Spending freeze? Did he even surprise himself when he said that?

JJ

-----
9:39
I am so sick of rebubs selling nuclear power as "environmentally friendly"

Where's TBO

---Deni

-----

9:41

In a packed bar trying to find elbow room.

Did that sumbitch just bold-faced defend the war? Obama doing well in response - curious to see how this exchange plays out.

-JJ

10:03

Obama's scoring points with the bar faithful.

Just got a cheer for pointing out that Ahdmenijad isn't the most powerful person in Iran, and the tea remark.

What IS the difference between a tactic and a strategy?

I'm just gonna throw random shit down here in the comments.

Deni said...

Yea, I keep hearing that tactic/strategy thing.

I think a tactic is devious/political and a strategy is well-thought out and noble. I guess?

Comments is a better way to do this, time stamp is automatic and we won't accidentally post over each other.

Hell yea, Obama!!!

"You were wrong" a bunch of times.

Deni said...

When is McCain going to say anything that's not just his usual talking points?

JJisafool said...

Wow, McCain managed to focus on the surge and get his buzzwords in - snatching defeat from the jaws of victory - and come out sounding like a genius for getting the surge's immediate effects right, even though he was wrong on so many counts going in.

JJisafool said...

Actually right about where the problems started, bailing out on the Afghanis.

Deni said...

I am so sick of the word "troop(s)" being misused by every politician and member of the media

JJisafool said...

McCain talking about all of his record of military choices, but they seem to end before the decision on Iraq. Hm?

JJisafool said...

Obama did well on focusing on McCain's Iraq/Afghanistan positions.

McCain responds with repeat of early points and a petty swipe.

Hard to listen to him.

Deni said...

I don't understand doing that whole list of things he supported or didn't support when the issue was about the things a person says (the whole thing started with Mc saying O shouldn't say he's going to bomb Pakistan, and responding that Mc talked about exterminating N Korea and bombing Iran)

Deni said...

Existensial threat to Israel?

WTF?

Wouldn't it be a real life threat, not a threat to their, I don't know what he meant, maybe soul?

Deni said...

Great point about the Iraq war making Iran stronger

I am going to blame JJ for the fiasco that has been live-blogging at the Victory Lounge. His idea, he didn't show up, and now I can barely hear what the fuck is going on.

Thanks, BUB!!!!

JJisafool said...

So, if you talk to someone with whom you disagree, you legitimize their opinions?

Seems that would make personal growth rather difficult.

Stop saying preconditions!

JJisafool said...

I'm a peach. You're welcome. My bad.

I owe you a drink.

Did McCain say "oh, please" and get a laugh. Is he getting flustered? He's certainly getting snitty.

the beige one said...

For the umpteenth time: Where the fuck is McCain's lapel pin?

Deni said...

Why anyone would brag about being friends for 35 years with a war criminal is beyond me...

Deni said...

Great point TBO, I wonder if FOX will go off on him as not being patriotic for not wearing one?

I'm guessing not...

JJisafool said...

Found a pet issue for McCain. Sounded quite eloquent and even calm, if a bit tinged with wild-eyed Red scare, talking about Russia and Georgia.

I think they are pretty close here. Maybe a good cool-down question from pot-stirrin' Lehrer.

JJisafool said...

Yeah, Deni, it mighta been a misstep to talk quite so warmly about Hank K.

JJisafool said...

I feel like Obama is comporting himself well compared to our last two debatorial combatants.

How do you think he's playing to the middle?

the beige one said...

well, I'll be catching this later on CSPAN...later fellows, let's discuss over email how/if we do this in the future.

TBO

Deni said...

I think he's done a good job of mentioning all the times he's worked with Republicans on issues, which is a way of shooting down McCain's silly charges about him being the most liberal and never "reaching across the aisle."

That is certainly about playing to the middle without selling out who you are.

JJisafool said...

Ah, hell, I'm working during the VP debate.

Deni said...

I wish someone would ask McCain why, if the "surge" (ie - escalation) was so fucking succesful, why can't we leave?

Deni said...

Well, the VP debate will just be a comedy of errors anyway.

Deni said...

Holy crap. When McCain said, "we've seen this stibborness before in this administration," was he actually trying to tie Obama to Bush?????????????

JJisafool said...

Yeah, I think we'll see more of those attempts as McCain tries to paint himself as the outsider.

I'm gonna go clean my palette with an episode of The Wire before the girls get home.

Can anyone tell me why is it that when Mickey C mentions the success of the surge, no one mentions that part of the reason it worked was because the sunnis started fighting against al-Qa'eda instead of with them? Is my timeline off?

There is actually a live blog widget that you can put in a post that allows for live blogging and commenting instantly.

I've seen it on Bugs&Cranks.com (a baseball blog). I'll try to find a link for you so you can use it for the next debate. Thursday. The VPs. I can't wait.

Fellas, nice job, actually, considering we had no idea what we were doing. Wish I'd been able to play.

Jer, I'm wondering if O was coached not to get too heavily into things. A bit of detail, yes, wonky, no. If it continues to come up, I'm gonna bet O goes there.

Earl, that'd be all kinds of awesome, it would be appreciated.

I realize that I'm not especially objective about this, but I thought Obama for the most part nailed it. McCain just kept throwing up the same shit over and over again. Does anyone truly give a fuck that he's been to Waziristan? Besides Waziristanis? He was doing a fucking travelogue. I kept expecting him to start a vacation slideshow. I also had to titter when he mangled Ahmadinejad's name.
